Colonno, the starting point of the Greenway del Lago di Como<\/h3>

Colonno is located on the western shore of Lake Como, between Argegno<\/a> and Sala Comacina<\/a>, and is part of the Province of Como. With around 600 inhabitants, it is one of the smallest villages on the lake. Even so, Colonno is best known as the official starting point of the Greenway del Lago di Como<\/a>, one of the most beautiful walking routes around Lake Como. <\/p>

Colonno lies at the foot of Monte Colonno, where the wooded mountain slopes descend directly into Lake Como. Its colourful houses, narrow alleyways and peaceful setting give the village an authentic charm. <\/p>

An authentic fishing village<\/h3>

Colonno’s history dates back to Roman times. For centuries, its inhabitants made their living from fishing, farming and trade. On the terraced hillsides above the village, olives, grapes and other crops were cultivated, while fishermen and farmers sold their produce in the surrounding villages and in Como. Colonno has preserved its medieval character remarkably well. Its narrow alleyways, stone houses and small squares still reflect the authentic atmosphere of this historic lakeside village. <\/p>

Things to see in Colonno<\/h3>

Although Colonno is not a major tourist destination, the village has a number of charming sights. Stroll through the historic centre, where narrow alleyways wind between closely built stone houses. At the heart of the village stands the Church of San Michele Arcangelo, whose Romanesque bell tower and fourteenth century frescoes are among Colonno’s most important historical landmarks. <\/p>

On the shores of Lake Como, you’ll find a small lakeside promenade, a boat slipway and a handful of caf\u00e9s and terraces overlooking the water. The atmosphere is peaceful and distinctly local, without the crowds that are common in the more famous villages around the central lake. <\/p>

Walk the Greenway del Lago di Como<\/h3>

Colonno’s best known attraction is the Greenway del Lago di Como. This popular walking route starts in the village and stretches for around ten kilometres through Sala Comacina, Ossuccio, Lenno and Mezzegra before reaching Griante. Along the way, you’ll follow ancient mule tracks, sections of the historic Via Regina and peaceful village streets, while enjoying spectacular views over Lake Como. For many hikers, Colonno is the ideal starting point for exploring the lake’s western shore. <\/p>

Cascata delle Camogge<\/h3>

Anyone driving into Colonno along the Strada Regina will quickly notice the impressive Cascata delle Camogge. This waterfall plunges more than 100 metres down the mountainside before flowing into Lake Como beside the road. It is especially spectacular after heavy rainfall. In July 2021, exceptional storms triggered a major landslide that sent rocks, mud and tree trunks crashing through the village, forcing the Strada Regina to close for several days. Signs of this event can still be seen today. While you’re exploring the village, don’t miss Casa Ponte, the charming little house built directly over the Pessetta stream. <\/p>

Why visit Colonno?<\/h3>

Colonno may not be packed with major attractions, but that is precisely what makes it so appealing. Wander through its authentic historic centre, enjoy the peaceful lakeside promenade and set off on the Greenway del Lago di Como, one of the most scenic walking routes around the lake.
