Laglio is one of the most charming villages on Lake Como. It lies on the western shore of the lake’s southwestern branch, about 14 kilometres from the city of Como, between Carate Urio<\/a> and Brienno<\/a>. With just over a thousand residents, Laglio is a small village, yet its idyllic setting, elegant villas and association with George Clooney have made it famous around the world. <\/p>

A village with Roman roots<\/h3>

Laglio has a long history dating back to Roman times. Its name is believed to derive from the Roman commander Lallius, while the village occupied a strategic position along Lake Como for centuries. The municipality consists of five hamlets: Germanello, Ossana, Soldino, Tic\u00e9e and Torriggia. Little remains of its Roman past today, although the ancient tower of Torriggia still serves as a reminder of that era. <\/p>

The village is nestled between Lake Como and the wooded slopes of Monte Colmegnone, which rises to 1,383 metres above the lake. Much of Laglio lies directly on the waterfront, allowing it to retain its peaceful character. Running through the village is the historic Via Regina, a charming ancient road lined with characterful houses, small squares and hidden alleyways. <\/p>

George Clooney and Villa Oleandra<\/h3>

Since George Clooney purchased Villa Oleandra in 2001, Laglio has become one of the best known villages on Lake Como. The historic villa sits directly on the waterfront beside a small harbour and is one of the village’s most photographed landmarks. Although the villa is privately owned and cannot be visited, many visitors still hope to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood actor. <\/p>

Clooney’s arrival put Laglio on the international map, yet outside the summer months the village remains remarkably peaceful. It is this combination of exclusivity, privacy and authenticity that makes Laglio such a sought after destination. <\/p>

A romantic village by the water<\/h3>

Laglio exudes timeless charm. Narrow streets wind past pastel coloured houses, elegant villas and small harbours where boats gently bob on the water. In spring, wisteria, colourful flowers and Mediterranean plants add vibrant colour, while olive trees and laurel shrubs blanket the hillsides behind the village. <\/p>

Laglio is a wonderful destination for leisurely walks or bike rides along the lake. It is equally appealing for joggers and hikers exploring the trails that climb into the surrounding hills. From the wooded slopes of Monte Colmegnone, you’ll be rewarded with stunning panoramic views over Lake Como. <\/p>

Torriggia and the narrowest point of Lake Como<\/h3>

The hamlet of Torriggia is one of Laglio’s most distinctive spots. It is here that Lake Como reaches its narrowest point, with just around 675 metres separating the western and eastern shores. As a result, the village of Careno on the opposite side of the lake appears surprisingly close. <\/p>

This is also where Lake Como reaches its greatest depth of around 410 metres. The contrast between the narrow stretch of water and its remarkable depth makes Torriggia one of the most striking viewpoints along the lake. <\/p>

Things to see in Laglio<\/h3>

Despite its modest size, Laglio is home to several noteworthy attractions. The Chiesa di San Giorgio is the village’s principal religious landmark. Dating back to the seventeenth century, the church was later enriched with elegant stucco decorations. Inside, visitors can admire valuable paintings, sculptures and an impressive altarpiece. <\/p>

Next to the cemetery stands the striking pyramid-shaped tomb of Giuseppe Franck. Rising around twenty metres high, this nineteenth-century monument is undoubtedly one of the most unusual landmarks on Lake Como. <\/p>

Nature lovers can hike to the Buco dell’Orso, a cave located at an altitude of around 600 metres on the slopes of Monte Colmegnone. It became famous after the remains of prehistoric cave bears were discovered there. Today, part of the cave is still accessible to visitors. <\/p>
