A hidden gem between Varenna and Mandello del Lario

Lierna is located on the eastern shore of Lake Como, between Mandello del Lario and Varenna, in the province of Lecco. With just over 2,000 inhabitants, it is one of the smaller villages on the lake. A history dating back to the Celts and Romans

The history of Lierna dates back to the Celtic period. According to several historians, the name Lierna is derived from the Roman word Hibernia, referring to the winter camps of Roman legions. Over the centuries, the village developed into a collection of eleven hamlets, where narrow alleyways, traditional stone houses and historic buildings still define the streetscape. Roman and medieval influences can still be seen throughout the village today.

Castello di Lierna and the Church of Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro

The main historical landmark in Lierna is the Castello di Lierna. This medieval lakeside hamlet has largely preserved its original character and is one of the oldest parts of the village.

Within the old castle walls stands the Church of Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro. This Romanesque church is home to several valuable fifteenth- and sixteenth-century frescoes and is one of Lierna’s most important religious monuments. Its lakeside setting also makes it one of the most photogenic spots in the village.

Riva Bianca, one of the most beautiful beaches on Lake Como

Lierna’s best-known attraction is undoubtedly Riva Bianca. This long beach of white pebbles is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches on Lake Como. Its crystal-clear water, peaceful setting and views of the surrounding mountains make it a popular destination during the summer months.

In addition to swimming, Riva Bianca is a popular spot for kayaking, paddleboarding and other water sports. Thanks to its gently sloping shoreline, the beach is also well suited for families with children.

Walking the Sentiero del Viandante

Lierna is an excellent base for hiking enthusiasts. The famous Sentiero del Viandante passes through the village and connects Lecco with Colico along the entire eastern shore of Lake Como. The trail leads through woodlands, historic hamlets, olive groves and numerous panoramic viewpoints overlooking the lake.

The Grigne mountain range is also nearby, offering a variety of hiking routes for both casual walkers and experienced mountain hikers.

Villas and hidden gems

Several historic villas can be found throughout Lierna. Villa Pini is surrounded by a lush park with centuries-old trees and a natural spring, while Villa Besana is a fine example of Liberty-style architecture dating from the early twentieth century.

Near Olcio, a former quarry produced the black marble that was used in the construction of Como Cathedral. It is another reminder of Lierna’s rich historical heritage.
