Moltrasio, a village of stone and water

Moltrasio is undoubtedly one of the most elegant villages on Lake Como. It is located on the western shore of the lake, between Cernobbio and Carate Urio, just a few kilometres from the city of Como. With around 1,800 inhabitants, the village stretches from the shores of Lake Como up the slopes of Monte Bisbino. Much of the village’s history is closely linked to the famous Pietra Moltrasina, a durable natural stone that was used for centuries in the construction of churches, villas and palaces throughout northern Italy.

Villa Fontanelle and Villa Passalacqua

Moltrasio is renowned for its impressive historic villas. The best known is undoubtedly Villa Fontanelle, which was owned for many years by fashion designer Gianni Versace. The villa became one of the most iconic residences on Lake Como, further enhancing the village’s international reputation.

Equally impressive is Villa Passalacqua. This eighteenth century villa is now one of the most exclusive hotels on Lake Como, surrounded by magnificent terraced gardens that descend to the water’s edge. Composer Vincenzo Bellini also spent considerable time in Moltrasio, where he wrote parts of his operas La Straniera and La Sonnambula.

Authentic streets and the Scala Santa

Despite its luxurious villas, Moltrasio has fully preserved its authentic character. Narrow lanes, natural stone staircases and colourful houses connect the different parts of the village, creating a timeless atmosphere.

The heart of the village is Piazza San Rocco. From here, the historic Scala Santa, an impressive stone staircase, has connected the upper part of the village with the lakeside promenade for centuries. Along the way, you’ll enjoy beautiful views over Lake Como and discover countless hidden corners.

Waterfalls, churches and scenic walks

Moltrasio is not only a destination for lovers of culture, but also for hikers. The Pizzallo stream flows through the village, creating several picturesque waterfalls along its course. After heavy rainfall, the Cascata del Pizzallo becomes one of the village’s most spectacular natural attractions.

Those looking for a longer walk can follow the Via Verde or the Sentee di Sort. These historic trails lead past old stone quarries, woodland and breathtaking panoramic views over Lake Como. The hillside hamlet of Tosnacco is also well worth a visit, thanks to its peaceful atmosphere and impressive views.

Churches and religious heritage

Moltrasio is home to two remarkable churches. The Chiesa di San Martino has served as the village’s parish church for centuries and houses several valuable works of art and religious relics.

The Romanesque Chiesa di Sant’Agata is also one of the oldest churches on Lake Como. Dating back to the eleventh century, it can be reached via an ancient stone path. Inside, you’ll find beautiful fifteenth and sixteenth century frescoes, while the exterior has retained its simple medieval character.
