Discover Carate Urio on Lake Como
Carate Urio consists of two villages, Carate and Urio, which share the same history. For that reason, in 1927 it was decided to merge the two villages into Carate Urio. Urio is situated a little higher up and overlooks Lake Como. Carate lies peacefully on the shore of Lake Como.
You can also reach Carate Urio by water taxi. Carate Urio is bordered by Moltrasio and Laglio. The city of Como is about 12 kilometers away. The village covers an area of seven square kilometers and has just over 1200 residents. The Via Regina runs through Carate and passes by the famous nineteenth-century villas, Villa ai Cedri and Villa Baragiola.
Of course, Carate Urio also has a church: Chiesa San Quirico e Giulitta was built right next to the bell tower. Today, these Romanesque buildings are an unmistakable part of Carate Urio’s skyline.
The history of Carate Urio goes back to the Romans. Here and there in the village, Roman inscriptions have been found over the past century. In 1877, Gallic burial mounds were also uncovered. An engraved stone, on display at the Civic Museum in Como, along with historical documents, shows that the Etruscans also passed through Carate Urio.
From Carate Urio, you can hike up to Monte di Urio and Monte di Carate!
