Sormano in the Triangolo Lariano

Sormano is located in the heart of the Triangolo Lariano, the mountainous region between the two branches of Lake Como. The village belongs to the Province of Como and is home to around 650 residents. Sitting at an altitude of more than 850 metres, Sormano is a popular destination for hikers, cyclists and nature lovers.

The legendary Muro di Sormano

Sormano is world-famous for the Muro di Sormano, one of the toughest climbs in professional cycling. The ascent is only 1.8 kilometres long, but features an average gradient of 18%, with sections reaching an incredible 25%. The climb was removed from the Tour of Lombardy after just a few editions because even professional cyclists considered it too demanding. Since 2012, the Muro has returned to the race and has become a pilgrimage site for cyclists from around the world.

Hiking through forests and mountain peaks

Sormano is also an excellent base for hiking. Several trails start in the village, leading to Colma di Sormano, Monte San Primo and the surrounding mountain peaks. Along the way, you’ll walk through forests and alpine meadows while enjoying spectacular views of Lake Como, the Triangolo Lariano and the Alps.

Besides its natural beauty, Sormano is home to several historical landmarks. In the village centre, you’ll find the Church of Sant’Ambrogio and the Church of Santi Valeria e Vitale. Just outside the village lies the Sormano Astronomical Observatory. Thanks to the area’s low levels of light pollution, it is one of the best places in the region for stargazing and observing the night sky.
