Griante, between Bellagio and Tremezzina
Griante, in the province of Como, is a picturesque village set on a sunny plateau about 50 metres above Lake Como, on the western shore, roughly 30 kilometres from the city of Como. The village overlooks the iconic Bellagio on the opposite side of the lake. This central location makes Griante an ideal base for exploring Lake Como. Ferries depart from Cadenabbia and Menaggio, two villages within walking distance of Griante.
The name may be derived from the French word riant meaning “smiling” or from the Celtic Griant-Tir, meaning “land of the sun”. The latter fits well, as Griante enjoys a sunny reputation, both literally and figuratively.
A village with a rich history
The village has a rich history. According to tradition, Griante was already founded around 500 BC by the Celts. From the 16th century onwards, however, it faced numerous invasions, looting, and fires caused by various rulers. Despite these turbulent times, Griante endured and gradually developed into a sought after retreat.
Villa Carlotta and Griante’s grand villas
Griante’s unique setting offers some of the most beautiful panoramas on Lake Como. It is no surprise that many elegant villas were built here over the centuries, including Villa Carlotta, famous for its botanical gardens, as well as Villa Collina, Villa Margherita, Villa Giuseppina, and Villa Norella. Today, these villas make up a significant part of the village.
Verdi, royalty and famous visitors
riante has been visited by numerous notable figures over the years. Giuseppe Verdi composed part of his masterpiece La Traviata here. Stendhal used the village as a setting for The Charterhouse of Parma. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow even wrote a poem about it. Royalty also found their way to Griante, including Queen Victoria, Nicholas II of Russia, Wilhelm II, and Pope Pius XII. They were drawn by the tranquillity, mild climate, and enchanting landscape.
The Greenway, azaleas and panoramic views
Griante is part of the Riviera delle Azalee, famous for its lush blooming azaleas that transform the landscape into a colourful floral paradise in spring. The romantic atmosphere is unmistakable, especially during a walk along the Greenway del Lago di Como, a scenic path that runs through the village. Behind it rise the imposing mountain ranges of the Grigna and Grignetta, inviting you to hike, cycle, or simply enjoy the views.
