Trattoria La Moltrasina in Moltrasio

Trattoria La Moltrasina is a cooperative that sets the tone with the slogan parlare, mangiare, vivere (talk, eat, live). The menu features seasonal dishes from small local suppliers. It's tasty, nothing more... We miss the atmosphere and a cozy dining space.

Trattoria La Moltrasina in Moltrasio… Last night we were dining once again at Trattoria del Fagiano in Moltrasio. You know, we are creatures of habit… Next to us was a couple we struck up a conversation with. She is an Irish woman who has moved to Cernobbio, and he is an Italian working in the textile industry. The small talk eagerly bounced from one table to another. We exchanged some nice addresses. Writing such a blog, you get to know the region well! They recommended we reserve a table for the next evening at Trattoria La Moltrasina. According to them, it’s also an authentic trattoria like del Fagiano, but better.

We would be surprised, but here we are tonight at La Moltrasina, all set to review!

We don’t have to drive far. Trattoria La Moltrasina is located in… Moltrasio, well hidden on Via Fratelli Raschi in the shadow of the church building on La Piazza San Martino. Above the door hangs the slogan parlare, mangiare, vivere.

The restaurant is apparently a cooperative… We curiously open the door. The building, with its old doors with glass panels and typical tiles, reminds us of an old school. We walk down the hallway and arrive at the restaurant.

The trattoria really does resemble an old (school) cafeteria, yes, a dining hall. We are warmly welcomed and assigned a table. Hmmmm, let’s see where we’ve ended up. We are not immediately overflowing with enthusiasm but remain intrigued. Will tonight be a truly authentic gourmet experience? The menu is definitely fine. Delicious, recognizable dishes and not expensive at all. There is even a daily suggestion and a wine list with wines from different regions.

As explained on the menu, Trattoria La Moltrasina focuses on seasonal dishes with local ingredients from small local suppliers. That deserves praise. Still, for us, La Moltrasina has a bit too much of a parish atmosphere. We ate well, but it wasn’t an enjoyable dining experience. The ambiance is lacking, and the uninviting interior with high ceilings and cold floor tiles certainly doesn’t help. Moreover, there aren’t many people tonight to bring some liveliness to the place. The waiter is very friendly but speaks so softly that it becomes embarrassing to keep saying “scusi” after a while…

It really depends on what you expect from a night out dining. Do you value honest and delicious food that benefits the local community? Enjoy being far from the tourist crowds? Then you’ll be satisfied here. But if you also want a touch of Italian coziness (for the same price), you’d better go to that other trattoria in Moltrasio…
