Sala Comacina and the Zoca de l’Oli

Sala Comacina is located on the western shore of Lake Como, between Ossuccio and Colonno, in the municipality of Tremezzina. With just over 600 residents, it is one of the lake’s smallest villages, yet its unique position opposite Isola Comacina makes it one of the most remarkable places on Lake Como. The village lies on a sheltered bay known locally as the Zoca de l’Oli, a name that refers to its exceptionally calm, mirror-like waters.

Isola Comacina and the water taxis

On sunny days, the bay fills with boats as locals and visitors drop anchor to enjoy the sunshine and the water. Sala Comacina is also the main departure point for water taxis taking visitors to Villa Cassinella and Villa Balbianello.

The village overlooks Isola Comacina, the only island on Lake Como and one of the region’s most iconic landmarks. From the small pier in the harbour, regular boat services also depart for the island.

Charming streets and Villa Rachele

Sala Comacina has largely preserved its authentic character through the centuries. Behind the lakeside promenade lies a maze of narrow streets, old natural stone archways, romantic balconies, charming little bridges and colourful houses.

At the heart of the village is Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, the lively central square of Sala Comacina. Around the square you’ll find several historic buildings, restaurants and inviting terraces. Those who follow the steeper streets uphill will reach La Punta, the scenic headland overlooking the lake. Here stands Villa Rachele, an elegant eighteenth century villa that was once owned by the Beccaria family and welcomed several prominent figures from Italian cultural history over the years. Even without visiting the villa itself, the walk is well worth it thanks to the magnificent views over Lake Como and Isola Comacina.

Greenway, lido en ontspannen aan het water

Sala Comacina is also one of the most scenic stops along the Greenway del Lago di Como, the popular walking route that connects Colonno with Griante.

The small harbour is filled with colourful boats gently bobbing on the water. Waterfront terraces and uninterrupted views of Isola Comacina create a wonderfully atmospheric setting. Right next to the harbour, you’ll also find a small lido with a sunbathing lawn and direct access to the lake, making it the perfect place to swim or simply relax by the water during the summer months.
