Tremezzo is undoubtedly one of the most iconic destinations on Lake Como. Situated on the sunny western shore, directly opposite Bellagio, the village is now part of the municipality of Tremezzina. A rich history along the Via Regina

It is believed to derive from terra di mezzo, meaning “the land in the middle”, as Tremezzo lies roughly halfway along the historic Via Regina between Como and Colico. The village dates back to Roman times and grew into an important stop along this ancient trade route thanks to its strategic position. After suffering destruction during the Middle Ages, Tremezzo experienced a new period of prosperity from the seventeenth century onwards, when wealthy merchant families built elegant villas and palaces here. By the nineteenth century, it had become one of the first internationally renowned tourist destinations on Lake Como.

Along the waterfront, you can stroll past historic hotels, charming cafés and restaurants, and colourful gardens, with the steep slopes of the Grigne and Monte Crocione providing a spectacular backdrop. Villa Carlotta, Tremezzo’s most famous landmark

The village’s most famous attraction is undoubtedly Villa Carlotta. Built in the eighteenth century, this magnificent villa is one of Lake Como’s best known landmarks, combining an impressive art museum with one of Italy’s most beautiful botanical gardens. It is especially spectacular in spring, when thousands of azaleas and rhododendrons burst into bloom. Located just a short walk from Villa Carlotta, the world renowned Grand Hotel Tremezzo is one of Italy’s most prestigious luxury hotels. It is best known for its iconic floating swimming pool, which appears to rest directly on the waters of Lake Como. Even if you’re not staying at the hotel, its distinctive yellow façade and spectacular lakeside setting make it instantly recognisable.

Promenade and Parco Teresio Olivelli

Tremezzo’s lakeside promenade is considered one of the most beautiful on Lake Como. Historic villas, elegant hotels, inviting cafés and restaurants, and small piers line the waterfront, creating a picturesque setting. Almost everywhere along the promenade, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Bellagio and the surrounding mountains.

A pleasant stop along the way is Parco Civico Teresio Olivelli, a beautifully maintained lakeside park featuring fountains, sculptures, shaded trees and plenty of benches. It is the perfect place to relax for a while and enjoy the panoramic views across Lake Como. Another well known landmark is La Catapecchia, a distinctive historic building along the promenade that has become one of Tremezzo’s most recognisable sights.

Churches and hidden streets

Those who explore the village centre and its hillside streets will also discover several historic churches. The Chiesa di San Lorenzo in Bolvedro is the most impressive, with its striking Baroque façade, beautiful frescoes and remarkable works of art. The square in front of the church also offers magnificent panoramic views over Lake Como. Another noteworthy landmark is the Chiesa di Santa Maria in Rogaro, well worth a visit for anyone interested in the region’s rich religious heritage.
