An elongated village between Como and Bellagio

Lezzeno is a charming municipality in the province of Como, located on the western shore of Lake Como. Covering an area of 22.5 km² and home to just over 2,000 residents, the village stretches for almost 7 kilometres along the lakeshore. It lies about 15 kilometres northeast of the city of Como and just a few kilometres from the famous town of Bellagio. Lezzeno consists of 17 small hamlets scattered along the shoreline and the slopes of Colmenacco, Forcoletta and Monte San Primo.

A history of Romans, war and shipbuilding

Archaeological discoveries, including Roman tombs, show that Lezzeno was already inhabited during Roman times. The village also played a role in the war between Milan and Como. Lezzeno sided with Milan, a decision that ultimately led to its destruction by the troops of Como.

Lezzeno has its roots in agriculture and fishing, with local products traditionally transported and traded across Lake Como. To this day, several old boatyards remain, serving as reminders of the village’s rich maritime heritage. Today, Lezzeno has become a popular tourist destination, where visitors can wander through picturesque streets, admire traditional stone houses and enjoy its peaceful atmosphere.

Palazzo Silva, witches and the Ponte del Diavolo

Lezzeno is home to several fascinating historical and natural attractions. In the hamlet of Morbia stands an ancient fortress that was later transformed into the impressive Palazzo Silva. According to a well known local legend, ugly women and witches from Lezzeno would shoot arrows at the handsome young men of Lenno, on the opposite shore of the lake. Anyone struck by one of these arrows was said to fall under a spell and instantly fall in love with the shooter.

But the tales of witchcraft do not end there. The Ponte del Diavolo, or Devil’s Bridge, is a historic stone bridge near Lezzeno that was once believed to be a meeting place for witches. In reality, it is one of the oldest surviving remains of the ancient Strada Regina. The bridge can be reached via a beautiful hiking trail that starts at Cascate del Lago and rewards walkers with breathtaking views along the way.

Grotta dei Bulberi and hidden coves

Lezzeno is an ideal destination for lovers of nature and outdoor adventure. Water sports such as canoeing, sailing and swimming are all popular here. The surrounding hills are crossed by several scenic hiking trails, while the shoreline is dotted with small coves and hidden gems, including Villa Citterio with its public lakeside park and the elegant Villa Silvia.

One of Lezzeno’s absolute highlights is the Grotta dei Bulberi, also known as the Grotta Azzurra. Located beneath the steep cliffs of Sassi Grosgalli, this cave is famous for the magical blue reflections that dance across the water when sunlight enters the cavern. The cave can only be reached by boat or canoe.

Taste the local speciality Misoltini

Lezzeno also has something special to offer when it comes to local cuisine. One of its best known specialities is Misoltini, a traditional Lake Como dish made from dried and grilled shad. The village’s restaurants also serve excellent Italian cuisine, often prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. We had the opportunity to dine at Osteria del Governo 1801, and it is one we can highly recommend.

Historic churches on Lake Como

Lezzeno is also home to several beautiful churches. The Chiesa dei Santi Quirico e Giulitta is a historic gem, renowned for its impressive architecture and valuable works of art. The Chiesa di Santa Marta, built between the 14th and 16th centuries, is the oldest church in the village and reflects Lezzeno’s rich cultural and religious heritage.
