Discover Mezzegra on Lake Como
Mezzegra on Lake Como is flanked by Lenno and Tremezzo and has an area of 3.4 km² About a thousand people live there, the Mezzegresi, the inhabitants of Mezzegra. The name of the town comes from Latin and roughly means in the middle. Mezzegra lies at the foot of Monte Tremezzo and offers a beautiful view of the central part of Lake Como.
Tourist attractions such as Villa del Balbianello are within walking distance. The ferry in Cadenabbia is just three kilometers away.
A dark and somber mourning ribbon hangs over Mezzegra. On April 28, 1945, in front of Villa Belmonte on Via Maggio 24, the fascist dictator Benito Mussolini was executed together with his mistress. Supporters and sympathizers of the dictator still visit Mezzegra to this day to commemorate him.
Although Mezzegra is not large, it consists of six districts: Azzano, Palo, Giulino, Bonzanigo, Mugnano, and Ganzo. Azzano has a lake view and forms the well known and romantic front of Mezzegra. Giulino forms the historic heart of Mezzegra. In the old town center you will find a remarkable number of frescoes. The oldest and most charming district is Bonzanigo.
Of course, Mezzegra also has churches: the Church of Sant’ Abbondio and the Church of San Giuseppe. There are also several beautiful and stately palaces to admire, such as Palazzo Rosati and Palazzo Brentano. The Brentano family was a wealthy family of merchants who spent lavishly in Mezzegra during the Spanish occupation of Lombardy.
Many hiking routes start from Mezzegra, with the walk to Monte degli Stampi being by far the most popular. Along the way you can find fossils and admire karst formations. Those who are less interested in rocks can always visit local bars to sample Mugnano wines, which are produced locally in Mezzegra.
